SHS Size & Weight Chart (IS:4923)
Here is the full Tubora square hollow section range, from 25 × 25 mm to 180 × 180 mm, with the theoretical weight per metre for each wall thickness. Shaded cells are in regular production. Grey cells can be rolled against an order. Fabricators use this chart to work out tonnage per job, pick the lightest section that does the work, and plan cutting lists. For weight per 6 m length, pieces per tonne and a size calculator, see our MS square pipe weight chart.

Weights are theoretical, calculated from the IS:4923 sectional area (outer corner radius 2t, or 2.5t above 6 mm) at 7.85 g/cm³. Multiply by 6 for a standard 6 m length. Manufacturing tolerance: thickness ±7.5%, weight on individual length +10% / −8%, outside dimensions ±1% (min ±0.5 mm), corner radii 3t max, squareness 90° ±2°. Thicknesses other than those shown can be supplied on request.

A square hollow section gives you equal strength on both axes and four flat faces. That means clean, square welded joints, easy bolting of cleats and plates, and a neat finish that takes cladding, sheeting and paint well. Tubora SHS is formed from HR coil, welded by high frequency induction and sized square with tight corners to IS:4923.
Where Tubora SHS Is Used
- Structural frames: columns, posts, trusses, portal frames, mezzanine floors and pre-engineered buildings.
- Construction and architecture: gates, grills, railings, balcony frames, canopies, pergolas and facade support.
- Infrastructure: stadiums, airport terminals, bus stops, parking structures and signage frames.
- Solar and energy: solar mounting structures and wind energy support frames.
- Industrial: warehouse and factory structures, storage racks, machine bases and conveyor frames.
- Transport: bus body and trailer frames.
- Furniture and fabrication: furniture frames, display units and general fabrication.
How We Make SHS
All Tubora sections run through the same controlled ERW line at our Janjgir-Champa plant:
- Raw material inspection of every HR coil
- Coil slitting to the exact strip width
- Roll forming into a round tube, then sized into a square profile
- High frequency induction welding
- Inside and outside bead trimming
- Cooling and sizing to final dimensions
- Automatic cutting to length
- Hydro testing
- Quality inspection: dimensions, weld, finish and straightness
- Bundling and dispatch
SHS, RHS or CHS: Which Section Do You Need?
Choose SHS for columns and frames that see similar load on both axes, and wherever flat faces make fabrication faster. For beams, purlins and rafters that bend mainly in one direction, Rectangular Hollow Sections (RHS) give more strength per kg. For poles, scaffolding and members in torsion, go with Circular Hollow Sections (CHS). See all three in our product range.
