This MS rectangular pipe weight chart gives the theoretical weight of every rectangular hollow section (RHS) from 40 × 20 mm to 200 × 100 mm, in wall thicknesses from 1.6 mm to 8 mm. For each size you get the weight per metre, the weight of a standard 6 m length and how many pieces make one tonne. Figures follow IS:4923, the Indian Standard for structural hollow sections.

Use the filter to find a size quickly, or the calculator below for any size, length and quantity.

Theoretical weights at a steel density of 7.85 g/cm³, using an outer corner radius of 2t (2.5t above 6 mm). “Regular” sizes are in standard production at Tubora; “On request” sizes can be rolled against an order. Tolerance as per IS:4923: thickness ±7.5%, weight on individual length +10% / −8%.

Rectangular Pipe Weight Formula

The weight of a rectangular hollow section is its cross-section area multiplied by the density of steel:

Weight (kg/m) = [2t × (D + B − 2t) − (4 − π) × (ro² − ri²)] × 0.00785

  • D, B = outside depth and width in mm
  • t = wall thickness in mm
  • ro, ri = outer and inner corner radius (2t and t for walls up to 6 mm)
  • 0.00785 = density of steel (7.85 g/cm³) converted to kg per mm² per metre

Worked example, 100 × 50 × 3.0 mm: 2 × 3 × (150 − 6) = 864 mm². Corner allowance = 0.858 × (36 − 9) = 23.2 mm². Area = 840.8 mm². Weight = 840.8 × 0.00785 = 6.60 kg/m, or 39.6 kg for a 6 m length.

Rectangular or Square: Which Saves Steel?

Turned on its deep side, a rectangular pipe resists bending far better than a square pipe of the same weight. That is why RHS is the usual choice for beams, purlins, rafters, lintels and chassis rails. As an example, 100 × 50 × 3.0 mm weighs 6.60 kg/m, the same as a 75 × 75 × 3.0 mm square pipe (6.60 kg/m), yet it is noticeably stiffer when loaded on its 100 mm face.

Where load comes from both directions, such as columns and posts, a square section is simpler. Compare weights on the square pipe weight chart or the round pipe weight chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate the weight of an MS rectangular pipe?

Weight in kg/m = cross-section area (mm²) × 0.00785. The area is 2t(D + B − 2t) minus a small allowance for the four rounded corners, where D and B are the outside dimensions and t is the wall thickness, all in mm. Example: 100 × 50 × 3.0 mm works out to 6.60 kg/m.

What is the weight of a 100 × 50 rectangular pipe?

A 100 × 50 mm rectangular pipe weighs 4.50 kg/m in 2.0 mm, 6.60 kg/m in 3.0 mm, 8.59 kg/m in 4.0 mm and 10.48 kg/m in 5.0 mm. Multiply by 6 for a standard 6 m length.

What is the weight of a 40 × 20 rectangular pipe?

A 40 × 20 mm pipe weighs 1.38 kg/m in 1.6 mm and 1.68 kg/m in 2.0 mm, so a 6 m length weighs 8.3 kg and 10.1 kg respectively.

Which standard covers MS rectangular pipes in India?

IS:4923 covers hollow steel sections for structural use, including rectangular hollow sections (RHS). It sets dimensions, mass, tolerances and mechanical properties.

How many rectangular pipes make one tonne?

Divide 1,000 kg by the weight of one 6 m length. A 100 × 50 × 3.0 mm pipe weighs about 39.6 kg per 6 m, so roughly 25 pieces make a tonne. The table lists this for every size.

Why does actual weight differ from the chart?

The chart shows theoretical weight. IS:4923 allows thickness within ±7.5% and weight on an individual length within +10% / −8%, so mill weight can vary slightly from the table.
