RHS Size & Weight Chart (IS:4923)

This chart covers the complete Tubora rectangular hollow section range, from 40 × 20 mm to 200 × 100 mm, with the theoretical weight per metre for each wall thickness. Shaded cells are in regular production. Grey cells can be rolled against an order. Use it to size beams and purlins, estimate tonnage and build your cutting list before you ask for a quote. For weight per 6 m length, pieces per tonne and a size calculator, see our MS rectangular pipe weight chart.

Weights are theoretical, calculated from the IS:4923 sectional area (outer corner radius 2t, or 2.5t above 6 mm) at 7.85 g/cm³. Multiply by 6 for a standard 6 m length. Manufacturing tolerance: thickness ±7.5%, weight on individual length +10% / −8%, outside dimensions ±1% (min ±0.5 mm), corner radii 3t max, squareness 90° ±2°. Thicknesses other than those shown can be supplied on request.

A rectangular hollow section puts more steel where bending stress is highest. Set on its deeper side, an RHS carries more load per kg than a square section of the same weight, which is why it is the standard choice for beams, purlins, rafters and chassis rails. Tubora RHS is formed from HR coil, welded by high frequency induction and sized to IS:4923 tolerances.

Where Tubora RHS Is Used

  • Roofing and sheds: purlins, rafters, roof trusses and pre-engineered buildings.
  • Structural framing: beams, lintels, mezzanine joists and portal frames.
  • Construction: door and window frames, gates, grills, staircases and facade framing.
  • Transport: bus body frames, truck and trailer chassis and cross members.
  • Infrastructure: stadiums, airport terminals, bus stops, parking structures and signage.
  • Solar and energy: solar mounting rails and support structures.
  • Industrial: warehouse and factory structures, storage racks, machinery frames and conveyors.

How We Make RHS

All Tubora sections run through the same controlled ERW line at our Janjgir-Champa plant:

  1. Raw material inspection of every HR coil
  2. Coil slitting to the exact strip width
  3. Roll forming into a round tube, then sized into a rectangular profile
  4. High frequency induction welding
  5. Inside and outside bead trimming
  6. Cooling and sizing to final dimensions
  7. Automatic cutting to length
  8. Hydro testing
  9. Quality inspection: dimensions, weld, finish and straightness
  10. Bundling and dispatch

RHS, SHS or CHS: Which Section Do You Need?

Choose RHS when a member bends mainly in one direction, such as beams, purlins, rafters and chassis rails. If the load is similar on both axes, Square Hollow Sections (SHS) are the better fit. For poles, scaffolding and members in torsion, use Circular Hollow Sections (CHS). Compare all three in our product range.
